BugZout provides pest control for homes and businesses throughout Salida. From historic downtown properties to neighborhoods and homes farther out in the valley, we know the pest problems that come with this unique mountain environment.
At just over 7,000 feet, Salida is surrounded by much higher mountains but has a surprisingly mild and dry climate. That means pest activity can be different here than people might expect from a Colorado mountain town.
The Arkansas River isn't somewhere outside Salida — it's part of downtown. The South Arkansas also joins the main river just east of the city. River corridors, irrigated landscaping and vegetation create very different conditions from the dry hillsides surrounding the valley.
Salida grew as a railroad town beginning in 1880, and its historic downtown still contains a large concentration of older brick buildings. Older structures can present different pest entry and hiding areas than newer homes and developments around town.
Downtown Salida developed alongside the railroad and Arkansas River. Today that same area is packed with homes, restaurants, shops and historic buildings — all within a few blocks of the river.
It doesn't take long to go from downtown streets to open land, irrigated properties and mountain surroundings. Those changes in elevation, vegetation and property type can also change the pests we encounter.

Cooler nights, changing seasons and buildings near open land can bring mice toward homes, garages, businesses and other protected structures.

Spiders are common throughout Colorado and often move indoors as temperatures cool. Garages, basements, crawlspaces and quieter areas around buildings provide plenty of hiding places.

Warm weather brings wasp and yellow-jacket activity around rooflines, decks, sheds, outdoor dining areas and other protected nesting locations.

Ants become active around yards, landscaping, pavement and foundations during warmer weather. Colorado also has carpenter ants, which are particularly associated with forested areas.

Restaurants, commercial kitchens, apartments and homes can all experience cockroach problems. Identifying which type is present helps determine where we need to concentrate treatment.

Salida gets plenty of visitors throughout the year, but bed bugs aren't just a hotel problem. They can be carried into homes, rentals and other buildings on belongings and furniture.
